Often when I create, the end result is never that which I had intended in the outset and there are those rare instances that I'm am just as surprised by my own art as if I had been just an observer all along. Ed is another one of those, "from the hip" pieces, something I did in a spare moment and never intended to be anything other than a quick gesture drawing. The copy, "Ed is dead" was a last minute detail that I threw in there at, well, the last minute only to fill the composition, yet truth be told, it has actually become my favorite part of this illustration. To me, such a simple statement speaks in a sublime yet brutally honest fashion of inexorable and ultimate finality. The question mark was also a last minute addition and is my second favorite part, as now my formally succinct phrase is entirely offset by the postulation of the unspoken question, does Ed realize that he's dead?

Though we may never know the truth, I was so taken with Ed and his mortal conundrum that I scheduled him as a reappearing, supporting character in a graphic novel I've got in the works.
