This is a picture of my good friend and fellow artist, Eli 5 Stone. It didn't start out to be that, in fact, I had started this piece intending it only to be a self serving doodle, done to keep my drawing muscles in shape, but because the initial two thirds of the drawing were so like Eli I ended up just finishing it as a tribute to my crazy friend. Over the years I've gotten to know Eli quite well and I'm continually amazed every time I look at this picture how incredibly like it's subject it was from the very beginning. I eventually made a gift of the original and sometime later Eli returned the favor by doing a portrait of me. Unfortunately he moved before I could get my hands on it. Funny how that works.
There are actually a couple of other interesting tid bits about this piece that I think warrant some attention. This piece eventually made it into the pages of Spectrum 7, but with one minor change. Due to a typo the published version now bears the title, "My Oal Enigma". Furthermore, in the bit of ground below the rocket is a small mushroom upon which sits a tiny snail, wholly unaware of it's imminent fiery demise. Normally I wouldn't have paid this detail two thoughts but as it turns out, not only is the snail a symbol I often use to represent myself, it wasn't until I'd finished the piece that I fully realized the snail's plight. |
