In freelance illustration there's always those assignments you take thinking you're going to absolutely love doing it, it'll be the best thing you've ever done, money will fall from the heavens, fans will fall at your feet and finally, after all the struggle and heartache you'll finally get the fame and fortune you so richly deserve. Instead, you find yourself pressed for time, boxed creatively and in general, just plain miserable. This was one of those jobs. After rejecting eight of my penciled proposals I was finally handed a crude doodle from which I had to reconstruct the above. In the end I have to say I'm not entirely happy with the results and had I to do it over, I would approach it from a much different direction.

Interesting side note: This isn't even the piece the publisher had ultimately asked for, THIS is. To cover my ass I decided it'd be in my best interest to do a second, "nicer" version. Sure enough, though they had asked for it, the client felt the first version was too "icky" (Seriously, their own words.) and they went with this one.
