I have long been fascinated with fish. I could sit for hours watching them swim about, seemingly oblivious to my presence, going about their business as a part of some great mystery that will reveal itself if I just wait or look hard enough. I have also been long fascinated by clockworks and steam engines. The click of meshing gears, the groan of coiling springs and the hissing breath of steam, to me, lends an almost magical life to the fantastic contraptions. Somewhere along the line it was only logical that these two interests should meet and the results you see before you.
Beyond the obvious I also like this piece because of an underlying idea I have that though, also fascinated by fish and taken with the clockwork mechanisms, the fictional inventor of this contraption has missed a vital element in the combining of the two. Here we have a machine that may look somewhat like a fish and may even move in a generally fishy manner yet is still a complete failure as it is lacking the subtle grace and sublime mystery that fish seemingly have in spades.
Someday perhaps I'll also become fascinated with perspective, revisit this piece and add some depth. |
