I was raised in a non religious household. I've never studied the Bible, sung a hymn, or recited a psalm in fact I've never even been to church outside the occasional wedding. Now I'm not saying organized religions are a bad idea or that it's better to lead a secular lifestyle, it's just that as an individual I have found it in my own best interest not to become affiliated them. Still, despite my layman lifestyle, I find the imagery often associated with the church, useful in delivering a highly impactive illustration. The crucifix and crown of thorns, because of their relation to a specific holy man of a somewhat far reaching religious order (Or orders if you so wish.), elicits an inherent positive emotional reaction despite it's somewhat gruesome connotations. The real irony however, is that by using such imagery one could argue that I too am somehow affected by such religious iconography. I guess after 26 years of living in a society so inundated with religion that though one tries their whole life to exist without religious influence, they are still touched in subtle ways. Weird.
